Which First Aid Course Do Babysitters and Nannies Need?

Start with the children you care for and the requirements of your role.

For occasional babysitting, Emergency Paediatric First Aid is a useful practical starting point.

Registered nannies and early years roles also need the certificate required by their registration, agency or employer.

Baby and child cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), choking and recognising serious illness are valuable skills whether you look after one child or work in a larger setting. The formal requirement depends on the role.

Occasional Babysitting

Emergency Paediatric First Aid covers core baby and child emergencies in six hours. It can suit someone learning for personal confidence when no full qualification is required.

  • Practise baby and child CPR and choking.
  • Learn about bleeding, burns and allergic reactions.
  • Try the techniques with training equipment and ask questions.

Parents may request a particular certificate or wider learning. Agree that expectation before booking rather than assume every babysitting job has the same requirement.

Registered Nannies

Nanny registration can involve the voluntary Childcare Register rather than the early years childminder framework. The applicable register includes a relevant First Aid requirement; an agency or employer may add a specific qualification.

Your registration body, agency or employer can confirm which qualification you need. Full Paediatric First Aid (PFA) covers a wider range of injuries and illnesses.

Childminders and Early Years Roles

For childminding and designated early years cover, full PFA is the usual starting point. It adds wider topics such as head injuries, fractures, asthma, poisoning and serious childhood illness.

Our full course combines six hours online with six hours practical. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) guide explains the First Aid requirements for early years settings.

Choosing Your Course and Certificate

Share the role, children’s ages and any specific requirement. We can explain places on public courses or private learning customised to your needs.

Adult and child skills can be covered together. An eligible extra Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) certificate can be added to a Paediatric course for a small fee with no extra training time.

Our adult and child skills guide explains the extra-certificate options.
