Understanding Ofsted's Paediatric First Aid Requirements

Let’s Clear Up the Confusion, and Understand What You Need

Navigating the requirements for Paediatric First Aid training can feel like trying to solve a Rubik’s cube—confusing, right?

But fear not! We’re here to make things crystal clear, especially when it comes to meeting Ofsted and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) requirements.

Whether you’re a childcare professional, a school staff member, or anyone responsible for children, understanding which course you need is crucial. Let’s dive in! 🌊

🎯 Who Needs What? Ofsted & EYFS Requirements

Ofsted (the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills) works to achieve excellence in the care of children and young people, and in education and skills for learners of all ages. The EYFS framework, on the other hand, sets standards for the learning, development, and care of children from birth to 5 years old.

The Two Types of Heroes: 6-Hour & 12-Hour Courses

1. The 6-Hour Emergency Paediatric First Aid Course 🕒

This one’s for the quick responders! Ideal for nannies, au pairs, and staff members who need a basic understanding without the full two-day course. It covers essential skills required in emergencies, empowering you to manage until the pros arrive. Perfect for those who are:

  • Part of a larger team but not the main first-aid provider
  • Looking for a refresher or a basic level of training

2. The 12-Hour Full Paediatric First Aid Course 🕛

The full monty! This is what you need if you’re directly responsible for children, especially in settings like nurseries and early years classrooms. It’s thorough, covering everything from minor injuries to life-threatening conditions. It’s a must-have for:

  • Early Years teachers
  • Childminders
  • Nursery staff

And the best part? Both courses are Ofsted and EYFS compliant! 🌟

🧐 Who Needs to Be Trained? Let’s Break It Down

Early Years Providers: If you’re part of this group, the EYFS framework mandates at least one person with a valid full 12-hour paediatric first aid certificate must be on the premises and available at all times when children are present. This also applies to outings.

Childminders and Assistants: You guys are the backbone of childcare, and Ofsted requires you to be fully trained with the 12-hour course to ensure the safety and well-being of the little ones in your care.

Schools & After-School Clubs: While the full 12-hour course is recommended, the exact requirements can vary. The 6-hour course might be sufficient for some staff, but having key personnel trained in the full 12-hour course is best practice.
