Can I Fail a First Aid Course?

What you need to pass, and how your trainer helps you.

Yes. To pass, you need to complete the course and demonstrate the required First Aid skills. Your trainer helps you learn through demonstrations, practice and feedback.

You do not need to arrive knowing how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). You practise on a CPR manikin and get feedback before showing what you can do.

What Does Passing Involve?

Your trainer assesses the skills required for the chosen course. You need to complete its learning and show that you can use the practical techniques, not simply attend.

  • Take part in demonstrations and practice.
  • Ask when you need a step explained again.
  • Complete any online learning required by your format.
  • Demonstrate the relevant skills in assessment.

How Does the Trainer Help?

Practice is part of learning. You can ask questions and receive feedback before showing your skills in assessment. Tell the trainer if you are unsure what to do rather than trying to guess.

The assessment checks that you can perform the required skills.

What if a Practical Task Is Difficult?

Contact us before the course about mobility, access or learning support. We can explain the actual activities and discuss appropriate support privately.

If a required skill is difficult for you, our team can explain the support available and discuss the next steps for your course.

Our practical participation guide explains useful questions if floor-level activities are difficult.

Get Ready for Your Course

You do not need First Aid experience before the course. Come ready to take part, practise and ask questions. If you need learning or mobility support, contact us before your training day.
