Agree the course, payment and arrangements before booking.

Where an employer needs staff trained for its workplace First Aid arrangements, employees should not be charged for that required provision.
A course you choose for yourself is a different situation.
Agree the booking and attendance arrangements before paying. That makes it clear who is approving the course and how the time and costs will be handled.
Section 9 of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act prevents charging employees for provision made under the relevant statutory requirements. Your employerβs First Aid duties sit within that workplace arrangement.
If an employer appoints you to provide required workplace First Aid cover, agree the course through that employer. If you buy a course yourself to strengthen skills or apply for a future job, reimbursement is not automatic.
If you want your employer to pay for a course you choose yourself, agree that with them before booking.
Course payment, attendance time, travel and an extra First Aider allowance are separate questions. Your agreement and workplace policy help determine the practical arrangements.
Our First Aider allowance guide gives useful questions to ask. If there is a dispute about pay or your contract, seek appropriate employment advice.
Places on public courses work for individual staff; a private course brings the team together with examples customised to the workplace. Our price guide explains the current displayed offers and team example.
Once approved, share joining instructions with learners and allow time for any required online study. That helps staff arrive ready for practical training.
