Which First Aid Course Do Personal Trainers Need?

Choose a course for your work, clients and certificate requirements.

A personal trainer meeting a First Aid instructor in an indoor gym

Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) is a useful starting point for many personal trainers needing core adult emergency skills.

Check any certificate requirements from your gym, employer, awarding organisation or insurer before booking.

Clients may become seriously unwell during a session, choke or suffer an injury. Practical training gives you a chance to rehearse helping them rather than work everything out under pressure.

Skills That Matter in a Training Session

Our EFAW course includes cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), using a defibrillator, helping someone who is choking and caring for an unresponsive person, alongside injuries and sudden illness.

  • Practise CPR and defibrillator use with training equipment.
  • Learn to recognise when a client needs urgent help.
  • Respond to choking, bleeding, burns and an unresponsive person.
  • Ask questions and receive feedback from your trainer.

The skills apply to emergencies, not diagnosing a client’s condition or treating sports injuries beyond the course content.

When Might Full First Aid at Work (FAW) Be Useful?

Full FAW adds training in a wider range of injuries and illnesses, including head and spinal injuries, fractures, asthma and diabetes. It may suit a setting whose needs assessment calls for wider cover.

Use the actual risks and specific qualification requirement to choose. A core workplace certificate is not automatically a specialist sports or Outdoor First Aid award.

Training Children as Well as Adults

If you train children as well as adults, tell us so we can include appropriate skills and examples.

If you also need a Paediatric certificate, you can add an eligible extra emergency First Aid certificate for a small fee, with no extra training time. Our adult and child First Aid guide explains the options.

Book for Yourself or Your Gym Team

Places on public courses suit an individual trainer. Private teaching brings the team together, with examples customised to your workplace and clients.

Share any specific certificate requirement before booking. Our price guide and blended guide help compare the practical options.
