Does a First Aid Certificate Last 2 Years?

Three Years for the Main Qualifications

Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW), full First Aid at Work (FAW), Emergency Paediatric First Aid and Full Paediatric First Aid certificates have three-year validity. Other awards, employers or clinical roles can have different update requirements, so use the named certificate and role when checking.

• Keep a record of the issue and expiry dates.
• Arrange requalification before the certificate expires.
• Check that any online learning and practical assessment have been completed.

Refresher Training and Certificate Renewal

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) strongly recommends annual refresher training for workplace First Aiders. It helps you keep your First Aid knowledge up to date between qualification courses.

Our online Annual Refresher course lets previous learners revisit the topics at their own pace. Refresher training does not change your certificate’s expiry date.

How Do I Renew?

To renew EFAW or a Paediatric qualification, take the relevant course again. If your FAW certificate is still valid, you can choose the shorter FAW requalification course; our team format combines one day online and one day in person.

If your certificate has already expired, find the renewal option for your qualification. HSE requires a current qualification for someone acting as a workplace First Aider.

How Can I Check My Expiry Date?

Your certificate shows its issue and expiry dates. If you have lost it, request a replacement copy. A replacement does not renew the expiry.
